The Science Behind Collagen

26/02/2024
  • Back to Journal

Collagen may seem like a skincare fad, destined to fade away once the next fad emerges. But collagen is so much more than that. Collagen is largely responsible for the taut, smooth, radiant skin of youth, and a lack of collagen is largely responsible for the sunken, pale, sallow skin most people develop as they get older. In this post we’ll look at the science behind collagen and why it’s essential for youthful skin.

First Things First: What Is Collagen?

Collagen is a type of fibrous protein. It is the most abundant protein in the human body. While there are 28 types of collagen Type I is predominant in the skin. The word “collagen” is derived from the Greek word “kolla”, which roughly translates to “glue”. And that is an apt definition because collagen, being a fibrous protein, acts as a type of binding agent that holds tissues together, including the skin. When our bodies are making lots of collagen our skin is firm and vibrant. But that happy state does not last forever.

What Happens to Collagen As We Age?

As we age collagen production begins to wane. This can start happening as early as our 20s, although it becomes more pronounced in our 30s and 40s.

As collagen production – specifically Type I collagen production – slows down the effects are most visible in the skin of the face. Cheeks begin to sag and fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear because the underlying layers of skin no longer produce enough collagen to hold everything together properly.

As skin integrity begins to break down the skin also loses elasticity. And because there is less collagen available to retain water, the skin begins to dry out as well. Favourable genetics can sometimes slow down the degenerative process, but eventually, everyone exhibits the effects of collagen loss.

Is There Anything That Can Be Done?

The good news is that it’s possible to stimulate collagen production to a degree that the aforementioned negative effects can be slowed, and to some extent, even reversed. One of the best products for stimulating collagen production is Hian Skin Collagen Vibrancy Cream from Bianca Miller London.

When used regularly Collagen Vibrancy Cream is absorbed into the supporting layers of skin where it stimulates collagen production and produces the following benefits:

  • Better hydration: Increased collagen production increases your skin’s ability to retain moisture.
  • Greater elasticity: More moisture equals greater elasticity and suppleness.
  • Enhanced blood flow: Enhanced blood flow from greater collagen production brings much-needed oxygen and nutrients to the skin.
  • Anti-ageing effects: Enhanced hydration and blood flow, along with greater elasticity reverses the effects of ageing and restores a more youthful, vibrant aura to your skin.
