Are you getting your 5-a-day in?

21/03/2023
  • Back to Journal

We all know the importance of eating plenty of fruit and veg and getting 5 portions a-day, into your diet.

However, living busy lives, consumed by work, families and other commitments, can mean the practicalities of getting 5 portions a-day in, doesn’t always happen! Your 5-a-day means consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, which is essential for maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases.

We’ve put together some suggestions for making fruit and veg part of your meal planning easier for you. Give a few a try and let us know what you think? You can even head over to the Hian Skin socials to add your own suggestions. Use the #hianskin and share with our community, how you get your 5-a-day into your diet!

  1. Plan your meals
Plan your meals ahead of time and include fruits and vegetables in every meal. Consider adding a variety of colours to your plate to ensure that you’re getting a range of nutrients.
  2. Snack on fruits and vegetables
Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on your kitchen counter and snack on it throughout the day. You can also cut up vegetables and keep them in the fridge for a quick and healthy snack.
  3. Add more vegetables to your meals
Add vegetables to your meals in creative ways, such as adding spinach to your morning smoothie or including roasted vegetables in your pasta dish.
  4. Choose fruits and vegetables as your go-to snack
Opt for fruits and vegetables as a snack instead of processed snacks like crisps or biscuits. Try moving any snacks high in sugar or saturated fats out of reach, so you’re less tempted to reach for the biscuit tin!
  5. Experiment with new recipes
Try out new recipes that incorporate fruits and vegetables. This can help you discover new ways to enjoy these healthy foods. If you’re a big meat lover, why not try adding one veggie meal a week to your meal planner. You never know, you could discover some amazing, healthy dishes you’ve never tried before!
  6. Consider frozen or canned options
As we’ve seen in February and March, many supermarkets are struggling to keep their fresh fruit and vegetable shelves stocked. When fresh produce is not readily available, consider frozen or canned options. These can be just as nutritious and are often more convenient when it comes to meal prep.

By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can ensure that you’re getting your 5-a-day and reaping the health benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
